Artist Statement

As a photographer, I have been fascinated by the constantly changing, often very intense or pastel colors of the sea and the sky for 40 years. As a physicist, I often think about how these colors come about. This knowledge lets me take a closer look and discover nuances that I would otherwise not have seen and could not capture in the photo. Many photos in this series were taken with a 300 mm telephoto lens. They only show a small section of the horizon that is particularly interesting in terms of color. With regard to the colors, the photos have not been edited afterwards.
Gentle regular waves are mostly bow waves of container ships. We only see them because, depending on their inclination, they reflect different parts of the sky towards the eye or towards the camera.
