DRYING-SHIPS MID SEPTEMBER
I was completely obsessed with this spot. Literally the short bluff overlooking waters edge is just a couple feet past the tree line. I could hear the waves crashing, smell the fresh water and feel the mist drifting up from the waves while I painted this one. The late summer colors were in full effect as the plants and trees swayed in the gentle breeze. Time literally stops for me in moments like this. My creative impulses take over and as much as I am seeing outward, I delve deeply inward to pull the image together.
This work is a combination of thick and thin painting. The sky is basically a wash coat, and I've purposely left exposed canvas "whites" as random highlights in the clouds. This allows it to gently dominate, yet recede, as the textures and color combinations of the various fauna burst forth, move about in the foreground and offer a thrill ride though the composition!
Hometown: Bloomfield Hills
Based in: Bloomfield Hills
My story is easy enough to tell…I’ve been creating since childhood driven by a need for order amongst disorder, new harmonies amongst objects, visually seduced by repetition, pattern, and color and onward the dance goes. At some point around the age of 15 or 16 a rather observant art teacher stepped in and put me on the path from wayward youth to wayward artist. From there it’s been an epicurean vacation of creation like a Jacques Cousteau dive special into the deepest reaches of my mind. Sadly, no sharks. The discoveries are constant, the sun is always shining, and the ocean is always beautifully blue. The rest is nature.
My work is held in multiple corporate and private collections throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
About my work:
I am an explorer at heart possessed with a need to look beyond traditions in style and question the unknown. Because of this the works are seeded in process painting and material discovery. Elements of drawing, textural curiosities and color/form relationships combine to create a unique aesthetic in each work. Depending on what is going on in the world at the time there will also be elements of nature and/or humanity in my work that mix about with abstracted components to create a sort of historic bibliophile in the paint…essentially a moment in time that reflects for a lifetime.
