DRYING-SHIPS MID TO LATE SEPTEMBER!

It was obvious when I walked the area that at some point the local ecology had changed leaving dead and dying trees in its wake. Adding to that there was great visual evidence of heavy storm(s) that passing through wiping out or damaging some of the remaining tress. However, over time and with a few natural building blocks nature had started anew. The rotted trees and rainwater fed the Earth, pines had come into play, old tree trunks were taken over by flowering vines while others sprouted shoots of persistent growth. At the focal point of this scene sat a mighty fighter, a grand old tree once halved by a storm. It had survived the ecological changes and storm's brutality and was busy rebuilding its stature one ring, one branch and one leaf at a time. I tried to imagine the history of this tree as well as the experiences it has had over the passage of time, and those imaginings persist throughout my paint.

Artist Profile

Born: 1969

Hometown: Bloomfield Hills

Based in: Bloomfield Hills

My story is easy enough to tell…I’ve been creating since childhood driven by a need for order amongst disorder, new harmonies amongst objects, visually seduced by repetition, pattern, and color and onward the dance goes. At some point around the age of 15 or 16 a rather observant art teacher stepped in and put me on the path from wayward youth to wayward artist. From there it’s been an epicurean vacation of creation like a Jacques Cousteau dive special into the deepest reaches of my mind. Sadly, no sharks. The discoveries are constant, the sun is always shining, and the ocean is always beautifully blue. The rest is nature.
My work is held in multiple corporate and private collections throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

About my work:
I am an explorer at heart possessed with a need to look beyond traditions in style and question the unknown. Because of this the works are seeded in process painting and material discovery. Elements of drawing, textural curiosities and color/form relationships combine to create a unique aesthetic in each work. Depending on what is going on in the world at the time there will also be elements of nature and/or humanity in my work that mix about with abstracted components to create a sort of historic bibliophile in the paint…essentially a moment in time that reflects for a lifetime.
