Artist Statement
My favorite little town in Michigan is Saugatuck, and it sits on Lake Michigan surrounded by mighty sand dunes and surf! The sights are stunning and walking the area will awaken your soul just as it does mine every time I am there. In this work I have highlighted the stunning overgrowth covering most of the rolling dune hills that sit peacefully against the lake. On that day the whole scene sat under a cloudless blue sky; a brilliant blue that I blended over time from multiple hues via hundreds upon hundreds of brushstrokes. My hand literally ached after each sky painting session! Kind of a pain/pleasure thing going on there! The best part of this work for me is knowing the what is actually buried beneath the dunes where I was standing...a ghost town once victim to a fire and abandoned in the 1800s. Occasionally you can get a hint of the old structures if the dunes are willing to give it up!

My story is easy enough to tell…I’ve been creating since childhood driven by a need for order amongst disorder, new harmonies amongst objects, visually seduced by repetition, pattern, and color and onward the dance goes. At some point around the age of 15 or 16 a rather observant art teacher stepped in and put me on the path from wayward youth to wayward artist. From there it’s been an epicurean vacation of creation like a Jacques Cousteau dive special into the deepest reaches of my mind. Sadly, no sharks. The discoveries are constant, the sun is always shining, and the ocean is always beautifully blue. The rest is nature.
My work is held in multiple corporate and private collections throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
About my work:
I am an explorer at heart possessed with a need to look beyond traditions in style and question the unknown. Because of this the works are seeded in process painting and material discovery. Elements of drawing, textural curiosities and color/form relationships combine to create a unique aesthetic in each work. Depending on what is going on in the world at the time there will also be elements of nature and/or humanity in my work that mix about with abstracted components to create a sort of historic bibliophile in the paint…essentially a moment in time that reflects for a lifetime.
