Artist Statement
At first glance I was bonded with this environment. The seemingly ancient evergreens stand as sentinels amidst wildflowers and weeds alike...just a sea of greens dotted with color...perfect nature!
There are a couple reasons why I truly enjoy this image. First and foremost are the tensions between warm and cool colors as well as deep texture vs. somewhat flattened surface (with a touch of dimension added thanks to sun and shade via chiaroscuro). The tension creates a beautiful illusion between foreground and background. Second, the technique for creating the effect of the evergreens is the very same I used when I was just 16 creating my first landscapes in watercolor. I cannot overstate the joy and passion to use that style of painting again. Stay tuned there will be more now that I am re-invigorated by it!

My story is easy enough to tell…I’ve been creating since childhood driven by a need for order amongst disorder, new harmonies amongst objects, visually seduced by repetition, pattern, and color and onward the dance goes. At some point around the age of 15 or 16 a rather observant art teacher stepped in and put me on the path from wayward youth to wayward artist. From there it’s been an epicurean vacation of creation like a Jacques Cousteau dive special into the deepest reaches of my mind. Sadly, no sharks. The discoveries are constant, the sun is always shining, and the ocean is always beautifully blue. The rest is nature.
My work is held in multiple corporate and private collections throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
About my work:
I am an explorer at heart possessed with a need to look beyond traditions in style and question the unknown. Because of this the works are seeded in process painting and material discovery. Elements of drawing, textural curiosities and color/form relationships combine to create a unique aesthetic in each work. Depending on what is going on in the world at the time there will also be elements of nature and/or humanity in my work that mix about with abstracted components to create a sort of historic bibliophile in the paint…essentially a moment in time that reflects for a lifetime.
