Artist Statement

There's a few real world traits in this work. The bottom left was influenced by downtown Chicago, while the diagonal line by the 101. My being in LA is massively influencing my work. I thought the city would need some parks, so I thought of the central park and the golden gate park, something large that would resemble some nature in the concrete jungle. Follow the 101 to top left, where perfect grid curves, soma and the Mission district from SF.

Artist Profile

Born: 1989

Hometown: Incheon, South Korea

Based in: Los Angeles

Justin N. Kim is a Korean born painter who currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Justin received his MFA degree from California State University, Northridge.

Justin paints gridded environments that acknowledge everyday human encounters and elements from visual culture. Concepts and designs derived from architectonics, cartography, fashion, and technology, as well as machinery and weightlifting depend on underlying systems of order and structure; each functions within a dedicated set of rules to establish a sense of logic and order. In his paintings, Justin re-contextualizes the visual elements drawn from these subjects and from quotidian human encounters, and he reconstructs and reorganizes them. Comprised of lines and shapes, the colorful, geometric compositions undergo a countless procedure of create-and-destroy, resulting in a cause-and-effect phenomenon; each layer interacts and communicates with the others, creating its own set of parameters. As a whole, the components function as an autonomous ecosystem that maintains a certain order and structure within each painting.
