"Flowers are the music of the ground. From earth’s lips spoken without sound, I read somewhere.
The little rendezvous with this piece was to me in my head thought provoking. I came home with two paper bags that carries Food, which after many hours of work had led me to this. Don’t we often discard the bag once their task is over, don’t we often tuck it away at time to use it later, and often forget all together.
This made me think of, how we often disregard the Older people, in Srilanka the ageing population is seen as vulnerable and weak, and lacking the ability to contribute towards society.
I saw parallels in the paper bags that once carries Food, to being forgotten once the task is over, just as We do with Elders, forgotten once the summer of their lives end.
Yet, if we lift that bias, and look don’t we find years and years of knowledge and experience within them, stories that can help someone younger to live by, to be motivated by?
In this light, I wanted to create a piece with two Persons, weathered, worn with life, wrinkled with each year has passed. If we were to look inside won’t their memories be like a garden of flowers in full bloom. Just like earth speaks to us through flowers of its beauty, can Life not be looked at beautifully with all their memories.
Can they not be wrinkled yet beautiful.
Just as long as you care to look and stop to see the flowers in bloom" -Kamilka Perera

Kamilka holds a Bachelors in Architecture from University of Moratuwa in 2009. In her paintings, she endeavors to convey the essence of varied inspirations she draws from sights and sounds of Srilanka, weaving into her abstracts a sense of individuality that is essentially hers. Not confined to one medium, she explores varied textures as she goes, true to the self-taught artist that she is.
From Landscapes to Line Drawings her work revolves free flowing strokes taking the realistic imagery, which the inspiration stems from, and transforming it to an abstract whole. Born in Colombo Sri Lanka, and a practicing Architect by Profession, Kamilka’s artistry is part and parcel of her being, from the Architect to the Artist, both sides merging and helping each other, uniquely called to create “The Painting Architect”.
