Artist Statement

In this work Helmets & Oriental Art
Girls and other stories are exploring the idea of women warriors where their strength is their beauty, harmony and subtlety of being, instead of the violence and physical strength typical associated with the costumes of warriors and their protective helmets.

I have always been fascinated by Asian culture.
That exquisite way they have of transmitting emotions in a subtle way coming from past lives.
A perfect harmony between the subtle and the gross, which manages to transport the observer into the observed, as if it were a deep meditation.
In this new series of works I want to take the viewer to another dimension located in another time where memories of past lives invade us with a feeling of peace, serenity and gratitude.

Each painting that I create is a unique dance with a variety of materials, unique to each work. I often refer back to traditional painting methods when priming the surface and preparing the paints. One of my preferred mediums is egg tempera, which i prepare myself from scratch in the same way that the renaissance masters would have done. I always use oils and inks in my work. The quality of these mediums enables me to build up subtle and rich layers, from which my poetic images appear. Each work is always a battle between exposing and suppressing different areas until the perfect balance of colour and form is achieved.
