Artist Statement
I make paintings and drawings that evoke presence, place, and nostalgia. The works use stencils of found objects, primarily plant-based forms, from my surroundings as a base for the works. The real-life objects are tangible traces of my daily life and routines and the leaf-like forms reference nature. The forms mark the places I have been as a representation of myself and within the world and reference the natural processes of both growth and decay.
I start each piece with a sketch for a basic composition, but the work unfolds more instinctively as I respond to, add to, and obliterate from paint and forms on the canvas. Each work has multiple layers, as though building a life from an accumulation of experiences¬. Abstracted leaf-like shapes and blocks of color float above and below grids in shades of blue with explosions of magenta and yellow. The paintings waver between abstraction and figuration, organic forms and systematic marks, understated blues and vivid warm colors, searching for eternal balance but never quite landing on it.
