About the art
Artist statement
Doing Cartwheels 1a is an abstraction of a kaleidoscopic image. There two main but separate intentions in this work - first to create an image that is like a clockworks, with a connected set of wheels (gears) spinning all together - and then to create a work that looks like the cross section of a array of bamboo cross-sectional slices pieced together to form a flat plane (as is done by various craft artists to form such things as table-tops, serving trays, trivets, and drink coasters). The main image (1a) is in black and white, as I am really only interested in the form here, but there are a few variations with coloring added, sometimes with the colors forming their own array superimposed over the black and white one.
