Artist Statement

Two paint strokes with the same colour pass up and down the canvas, one moving left to right, the second right to left, each stroke widening until at the exhausted end of each brush-full, the residual paint fills the space.
Where the two strokes overlay, a second colour, or darker tone of the same colour is produced.
The billowing paint silences a background which the artist inhabits and paints, and it is in this almost disregarded setting where the viewer is invited to stand.
Within the conceptual ‘mix’, the artist / I had the bellows of a piano accordion in mind, and the alliterating, tantalisingly ambiguous word-pairing, ‘bellowing below’.
