Artist Profile
Born: 1981
Hometown: Cebu City
Based in: Cebu City, Cebu
Born in 1981, Kidlat dropped out of art school to pursue his passion for art by channeling them to a bigger venue –the streets. He, along with other street artists, founded Cebu’s most well-known street art groups ‘Ubec Crew’ and the Junks Collective.
Kidlat’s works are archived casualties both from his observance and experience in the community he dwells in. He believes that in order to elevate people’s consciousness, we should give regard to the mundane things and happenings around us; that aside from our accomplishment, we also identify with our habits.
Now known as the city’s go-to conceptual artist, Kidlat’s clever works show off symbolic subjects in minimalist composition. He paints like a conversationalist but his work has always been straightforward, relatable, and sincere. After mounting his first solo exhibition entitled “Retaso: Of Salvage Stories and Articulated Clichés” in Qube Gallery and having entries in Art Apart Singapore 2016 and Manilart 2014, Kidlat is now carving his name in the local contemporary art scene.
