Artist Statement

IconCaretDown

Inspired by the beauty of nature at twilight, when all has quiet down and are painted in blue light. The trees look into the mirror provided by the water and enjoy the mirror image of the sky. This series are inspired by the special places where we can enjoy the peaceful beauty of he view of water.

This pastel painting from my new Water Views series is inspired by the beautiful places where we can admire the view of water. I live on a peninsula on the West Coast of Norway, with the North Sea at one side and the Fjords on the other. Majestic mountains and peaceful spots amongst trees provide shelter from rain and wind and great views of water.

Artist Profile

Born: 1963

Hometown: Stavanger

Based in: Stavanger

Colour have fascinated and kindled my imagination my whole life, it has been the main ingredient in my work throughout my years. The opportunities that presented themselves sent me on different paths.  I made a career as an Art-Director in a advertising agency, some years later I was ready to try something new and wanted a new direction in my life. I  moved to England where I studied Art and Art Therapy, I did my art training at Tobias School of Art in East Sussex, and got my diploma in 1997. Back in Norway I worked as an Art Therapist mainly with children and young adults. Two years ago I decided it was time to follow my heart and passion and develop my own artwork. It has been a hectic period with a steep learning curve to get it right but I have been more productive and inspired than ever before. Connecting with galleries, collectors and curators has given me new opportunities. I have received awards for my artwork and it has been exhibited and sold to collectors both nationally and internationally.

I live and work on the West coast of Norway with the North Sea at one side and Fjords on the other. I want to convey my perception of these old landscapes to the viewer, to visualise the abundant beauty and vulnerability of this nature through the veil of memories and the vibrancy of the colours. I like to capture moody moments and express its calm and serene greatness. These lyrical landscapes are not pictures of actual places, they are made from memories and one could call them soulmoods, as they express emotions and a state of mind as much as a landscape.

My pastel paintings are like colourful stain glass windows revealing a footprint of my soul and transporting the viewer to my beloved landscapes. Standing in a landscape without traces of human activity merge the experience of the past and the present. The timelessness of these old landscapes stop time and create moments of longevity. Remnants of old, lived lives trigger my imagination and bring back a touch of the past I can connect with. By conserving these golden moments I make my own brand of permanence and bring together the present and the future.

I like to paint serenity and calmness into my art and like to think about myself as an conservator of quiet moments and blissful transience - it goes well with the poetic palette I use to express my lyrical impressions.

My work is primarily created in soft pastel, I use handmade soft pastels that are made to last. As a tactile person dry pastels are the obvious choice and my much preferred medium to work with. Using a “hands-on” approach is just right for me. I love the feeling of the pigments in my hands, moving and mixing them, creating shapes, edges or shadows with my hands and fingers. Soft pastels have an exceptional degree of intensity, the vibrancy and purity of the colours and the way they carry the luminosity of the different colours are fantastic and as close to my imagination and perception as I have found in any medium. This combined with the silky matt surface they create make it an interesting and inspiring medium to work with, leaving the viewer with a beautiful artwork that I’m proud of and enjoy.

Colour is the language of my soul and keep fascinating and inspire, rendering me unending possibilities of exploration.
