Artist Statement

Artist thinking about the artwork:
A performing image of a Blue Man acrobating in the garden, with big and small trees, details and flowings, which creates a pleasant visual. Unfortunately, the blue man is not real, but it's another masked performance; it exists somewhere on the earth, somewhere in the imagination.

Artist Profile

Born: 1976

Hometown: Hanoi

Based in: Hanoi

There’s always an alluring and haunting quality to Lai Dieu Ha’s art. Born into a family of artists, Ha graduated from Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 2005. In the period between 2005 and 2012, she infused the disciplines of psychology, psychopathology, and sociology into her performance arts. Using her own body to experiment, she often invited the audience in as part of her groundbreaking and sometimes controversial performances. Ha is not afraid to make a bold statement to transcend the confinement of rules, rigidity, and social molds. Through her art, she voices about female identity, sexuality, and freedom of speech. The period between 2012 to 2016 saw a shift in her artistic expressions toward an amalgam of different mediums, from photography, painting, sculpture to installation and video. In her detailed research with doctors and patients, she employed psychodrama methods to examine suffering and center her artworks around the absorbing concept of psychological blurriness. Her curiosity about the world continues to evolve and revolutionize her arts. Intrigued by her own observation of a microorganism called hydra oligactis, she once again draws the inspiration from the root of nature, creating meaning and concreteness to an otherwise amorphous biological creature. To her, the hydra embodies freedom with its asexuality, ability to regenerate, adapt and transform. Hydra became the central muse of a performance titled “Clinging Hybrid” at the Goethe Institute in 2012 and her series “Conservation of Vitality” at CUC Gallery.

The first reaction of the audience to her works is often a sense of awe, a splash of beauty, rich and resplendent impressions of color and thought-provoking materials. Then we delve into a space of depth, reflection and wonderment – our search for meaning. Our conceptions of the world is upended. That’s the way Ha challenges the idea of  “separateness”. She seeks to bring together people, cultures, different modes of thinking and lens of looking at the world, obliterating boundaries and imposition. She leads the audience down the path to find the answers and interpretations for themselves.

“We understand that the world, generated from chaos, has an overarching order. We obviously still have a limited knowledge of the universe, so the only thing we can do is to listen, connect and love,” the artist reflected.

“Everything is indeed the reflection of its opposite: male and female; yin and yang; day and night. To love other people in all their complexity and contradictions is the physical expression that opposites can coexist.”

Lai Dieu Ha has held exhibitions around the world, including the US, Denmark, Israel, Norway, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.
