Artist Statement
Oil and acrylic on canvas.
Laura Newman's paintings combine geometric delineations of space, ephemeral color fields, dynamic lines and organic forms, resulting in atmospheric images evocative of representational landscapes, but always opening up to something more, something beyond.
In Birds, whorls and pours of translucent paint activate a crisp field of pure white oil paint. For a long time Newman has felt that a painting comes alive when she can feel the space in it. In her own words: "I would like to be able to paint air, but in order to paint air I realized that I needed to paint things in it."
