Artist Statement
Laura Newman's paintings combine geometric delineations of space, ephemeral color fields, dynamic lines and organic forms, resulting in atmospheric images evocative of representational landscapes, but always opening up to something more, something beyond.
Her approach to painting is improvisational. Stains and pours generate abstract forms. Newman turn these shapes into characters and set them to play in unpredictable abstract narratives. Her paintings change a great deal in the process of making them. At the same time, she is after a feeling of freshness in her work. In Bonbon, she used white oil paint to edit and allow space for the luminous translucent colored forms to interact.
