Artist Statement
'In-Between' reflects the serenity of a cold misty morning in a bog, when the thick soundless fog, glowing with the early light, rises from a nearly frozen wetland, still uncertain in its destination. It is the place in-between, where the earth, water, and sky mingle to create a combined reflection, the firm boundaries of each fading, giving way, to become something new. But, is the new place merely a shield of fog masking the realities of what was left behind?
The place “in-between” is a metaphor to describe the mixed feelings of an expat, who realizes that the memories of home — once so vivid and stark — are starting to fade, yielding instead to a new, more selective, collage of nostalgic memories, inhabited primarily by pleasant colors and positive feelings. This is a newly edited fantasy that trades the complexity of past realities for the easy comfort of identity. Having stayed abroad long enough, sooner or later an expat may find themselves standing at the way-station, presuming that one must choose a direction rather than calling both places home.
