'Underneath the Giant' is an ongoing project, an exploration of a habitable moon circling a gas giant in a type F solar system someplace in our galaxy. Eons has passed. Events have shifted this old and slow land. Fragments of a history are to be found in this uncanny and intangible space.
‘Observing the Giant’s Pull’ is a triptych concerned with visualising the alien day-night cycle of this sublime and sinister space. Referencing Hiroshi Sugimoto’s seascapes, these three images show it takes this moon 60 hours to rotate around its parent, leaving this place with no distinctive seasons and long stretches of day and night, dawn and dusk.
'Eerie Night' is the dark night that demands fear. Its silence gives an odd sense of peace.
Join me on walks in between moments of significance and legend.
Based in: London
Luc Schol (b. 1991) is a Dutch visual artist creating his own fantastical realms. He is based in London and Rotterdam. After attending the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague from 2009 to 2013 he received his BA in photography at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in 2015. He obtained his MA at the Royal College of Arts in 2021 and is selected to attend an exchange with the Kyoto School of Arts. He exhibited his work at North Sea Jazz, Van Gogh Museum and others.
Schol's practice is concerned with exploring and questioning escapist realms, wether physical or digital. He traverses these lands by foot, mouse or joystick and use the camera to create large enigmatic imagery to invoke a meditative experience. Schol wonders what escapism means for the human condition, as it is so seemingly pointless yet so irrefutably important.
He focusses on building works that are simplistic, experiential, and transcendental.
