Lydia Janssen, b. 1976
USA
Lydia Janssen was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1976 and received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 1998. After graduating, she moved to New York City to pursue a professional dance career, dancing at the Merce Cunningham Studio School amongst others, and performing with modern dance troupes Pam Tanowitz Dance Company and Jordana Toback/POON Dance Company.
Janssen's dance career ended after several injuries, leading her to focus fully on her art. Janssen spent a year at the Graduate Fine Arts Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before returning to New York to study at the Art Students League of New York (2005-07) with Larry Poons and Ronnie Landfield, where in her final year won the prestigious Red Dot award for Excellence in Painting. Larry Poons wrote the foreword to Janssen's recently released book "Dance to Art"
Janssen’s paintings are in private collections in the US, Europe and Asia, most notably in the collection of Singaporean Koh Seow Chuan. To buy Janssen's original works, check artsy or contact her galleries: Susan Eley Fine Art Gallery in New York City or REDSEA Gallery in Singapore.
A small number of Janssen's favourite paintings have been made into limited edition prints, using museum quality fine art paper and printed by Atkins Lab in Adelaide, Australia. Many of these are limited editions of 8 which are 80% of the size of the original. There are also some larger edition numbers, editions of 25 and 100, which are 50% and 25% the size of the original respectively.
