Artist Profile
Born: 1993
Hometown: Gothenburg, Sweden
Based in: Zurich, Switzerland
Maja Malmcrona is an artist, architect, and writer, born 1993 in Gothenburg, Sweden. After finishing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Architecture from Umeå University, her passion for philosophy and literature brought her to the United Kingdom, where she completed a Master of Science in Philosophy degree at the University of Glasgow. Her dissertation explored the value of art as the meaning–giving substance of our culture, akin to that of the religious experience. This brought her back to and cemented her strong passion for art, in particular painting. Her work is held by collectors in Switzerland, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States. She currently lives and works in Zürich, Switzerland.
Maja’s work is characterised by experiment, mistake, and failure, and the slow emergence of a kind of coherence based upon this open–ended quest. The pieces are always works in progress and never fully complete, consisting of multiple layers of various media that create a living, three dimensional, and almost sculptural surface. By integrating all aspects of this often painstaking journey into the final work itself, the pieces become like monuments to the range of emotions inherent in the process of creation. Her work attempts to explore a kind of disruption in one's position in space and time, acting as portals into a novel way of looking at the world around you, and your own mind.
