Artist Profile

Hometown: Salerno

Based in: London

Maria Sole Giglio is an italian maker based in London where she works as ceramic technician and teacher, when she is not making at studio in Leyton. She practice both throwing and hand building with two different approaches to the creative process. Throwing is a rational and functional part of her making, while hand building is an emotional, almost unconscious process of creation and therefore is very personal and intimate. Through hand building she developed a style made by very thin coils which overlaps creating patterns and symmetrical embroidery of vases. She mostly use black clays like vulcan clay, sometimes combining it with porcelain and then glazing only inside in order to mantain a rough and earthy surface on the outside.

The concept behind the artwork.
Why vases?
The vase has always been a symbol of beauty since ancient times, when ceramic was one of the first technology and the human being hadn't lost yet the ability to live in harmony with nature. The aesthetic research behind decorative pottery, as any other form of ancient art, is always linked to metaphysic and ontological matters too, and it open questions such like "what is art?" or" why do we do art?". Over time human being has changed in its approach to life and so in its esthetic and spiritual research as well: we could say that because of its inability to control the reality, gradually human changed it ( through structures) and eventually the reality that it has created is changing it, throwing it away from nature.
Therefore the vase represent a metaphorical border which place the human being still as "human", still within the natural world, still in connection with it, still part of it and able to achieve its own freedom without taking control over the rest of the existing.
So Maria Sole creates a phenomenology of vase which she names Ancient Spirits: each pot is a spirit and each of them represents different aspects and characteristics of human being in its basic sense.
Ancient Spirits want to recall an art process and aesthetics conforming to nature rather than structure, to perception rather than intellect, to natural rather than artificial, to freedom rather than control.
