Artist Statement

Pauwels' current paintings feature either extremely elongated or minuscule figures in a minimalist environment. By playing with scale she wants to provoke a sense of confusion for the viewer while creating a counterbalance in her otherwise more melancholic and introspective work.
In this piece the viewer is struck at first by the lonely figure on the wall but when coming closer the two minuscule bathers appear and the wall becomes a diving board. The ironic title is adding to the confusion, it can go in either direction. It is up to the viewer to complete the story.
The wall remains an important feature in her work, built up by different layers of acrylic, oil paint and embedded written, often ambiguous or challenging, thoughts. The titles and the subjects themselves a comment on social attitudes. The work ships in a wooden crate and is ready to hang. Avoid hanging it in areas of high humidity and direct sunlight.

Artist Profile

Hometown: Dendermonde

Based in: Olvera-Cádiz

Marleen Pauwels is a Belgian born artist based in Spain.
She studied Life Drawing at the Constantin Meunier Art School in Brussels, Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dendermonde and Etching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Aalst.
In 2001 she started travelling through Spain and eventually settled in a small mountain village in Andalusia, where she currently has her studio.

Pauwels' work is centered around silence and solitude.

She builds up her paintings through different layers of paper, acrylic paint, rock-powder and oil paint, hiding carefully chosen text messages in between.
Her palette is intentionally restrained // " I want to create an atmosphere in my work, and too many bright colors would generate a language that is not useful to me."

Her current paintings feature either extremely elongated, or minuscule figures in a minimalist environment. Those naked figures are merely symbols of the duality of human nature in its pure essence.
The juxtaposition of these opposing, seemingly fragile figures within empty spaces - away from any unnecessary adornments - confirms her statement.

Her work has been awarded and published internationally and can be found in private, public and corporate collections throughout the world.
