Artist Statement
Covid Nights is a 16" x 32" diptych of two separate 16 x 16 panels. It is a signed original abstract acrylic painting by Marlene Struss on wired cradled wood panels with lightly varnished sides to complement the painting. The dominant colors are light coral, dark cobalt blue, brownish plum, light cobalt blue, and white. The style is biomorphic abstract expressionism. There is a dreaming or snoring character on the left and the rodent-like character on the right who seems to be settled into a contemplative pose. They both rest alone on swirling clouds of uncertainty speckled with menacing moving spheres. They are hunkered down, separated by the physical division of the painting, representing the loneliness, ambiguity, and vulnerability felt during the covid pandemic.
