Artist Profile
Born: 1976
Hometown: Quezon City
Based in: Marikina, Metro Manila
Martin Honasan is a Philippine artist who works with collage, acrylic and watercolor. He works and lives in the City of Marikina in Metro Manila.
His recent work captures the cycle of destruction and rebuilding, which the city endures during every typhoon season, with devastating loss of life and property. Fabric cuttings subjected to rough handling are gathered into collages, from which the faces of Honasan’s fellow Marikenyos emerge. The layers of paint dissolve into mud, analogous to the muck clingning to the landscape after a flood.
Aside from local institutions Honasan has participated in various group shows and individual exhibitions since 2005 in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Japan, and local and international art conventions such as Art Fair Philippines, Art in the Park, Bazaar Art Jakarta, and Manila Art. In 2016 he participated in an artist residency program in Osaka, Japan where his completed works were exhibited at the YOD Gallery for his 10th solo show.
