Saudagar Angin which is part of his Moulding the History series, Masnoor discusses about the effects of colonialism and post colonialism. During one of his research, he found a rather disconcerting black and white photo of Malay man carrying a British colonist on a sedan chair. During the colonial days, Malayans were treated as servants or slaves to the colonists such as manually fanning them in pre air condition era or carrying them around in sedan chairs. Masnoor reflected this through a very strong visual depiction on this current contemporary time of the post-colonial era. The artist symbolically places himself as a Malay man seated the sedan chair with a high songkok (similarly to a chef where the higher the hat the higher the status) and carried by also a Malay man against the background of whitering oil palm plantation. Perhaps connoting that we as a nation may have gained indepedence from the colonists but the main question is having we come out from the mentality of enslavement even on our people for the purpose of better socioeconomic status. Saudagar Angin though seemingly a simple visual form but speaks in volumes the social commentary abilities of Masnoor as a contemporary artist to be reckoned with.

Masnoor Ramli’s multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, print, photography and video while balancing the emphasis on conceptual urgency and visual delivery. Often incorporating Western icons American politicians such as George W Bush in I Dream of Rome and Barack Obama in Moulding the History spring to mind. Masnoor is known for employing the figure as a site of discourse. Upon graduating from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Masnoor went on to found the MATAHATI art collective along with Ahmad Fuad Osman, Ahmad Shukri, Bayu Utomo Radjikin and Hamir Soib. Today, he stands out as one of the most influential contemporary figures in Malaysia, as both an artist and an intellectual.
