About the art
Artist statement
A quirky portrait I made of the great abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. He is one of my favorite painters and that is the reason I chose to paint him. I started a series of paintings of people that influenced me and my art. The portrait is intended to normalize him, he was known to be very moody and I wanted to bring a more cheerful tone to the image. I started from a black and white photo to which I added a colorful pattern. I know he opposed pop art, so I wanted to play a bit with the history of art.
