Artist Statement
Monika Gardyla' work crosses disciplines but primarily involves painting, collage and digital image manipulation.
Monika inspiration often comes from mid-century architecture and design, the unique design of movement of Arte Nueva and objects that have fallen out of use.
After spending the best part of a decade in Brazil, Monika has recently relocated to North London. She divides her time between working as an artist (London) and organic food farmer/surf instructor (Itacare - Bahia -Brazil) for six months in each country.
She creates her colourful collages with a distinctive graphic edge, reflecting her love of geometry, shape, and pattern.
Her keen eye for colour and layering, masking some areas off while revealing flashes of intense colour in others.
Working in a loose and organic way - the compositions were created randomly over time, adding numerous forms and colours on top of one another. That creates a subtle layering effect, adding a sense of depth to a normally flat surface and ultimately become a visual diary.
She has spent years amassing a collection of found materials like book covers, sweet wrappers, cardboard, vintage posters, wallpaper, documents and stamps, cribbed together using a variety of methods from painting and printmaking to assemblage and sewing.
