Artist Profile
Born: 1952
Hometown: Japan
Based in: Japan
Nobu Yamanaka (b. 1952) paints a universe that implies human existence. He believes that categorising paintings into figurative and abstract is a thing of the past. For him, paintings are a medium of expression with colours being a fundamental and universal language for communication. The form and composition of a painting add to this visual language to arouse the senses and evoke the imagination. Nobu’s works are about the sky and the earth that compose the universe. At a glance, they might look inorganic because there are no human beings. But as the viewer contemplates them, a gamut of human emotions surface: joy, sorrow, and achievement among others.
The artist has exhibited widely across Japan as well as abroad, including Paris, Hawaii, Italy and New York.
