Artist Statement

Carrara marble has been a faithful companion of the great civilisations and an essential material for the great sculptors. Michelangelo himself was an admirer of this material and his most famous work, The David, is made of this marble. It is universally known as one of the most appreciated marbles for its whiteness, extracted from the quarries of the Apuan Alps in Carrara, Italy.

And I am an admirer of ancient art and also of Michelangelo, so I went there to carve my marble pieces from the Apuan Alps. I spent two weeks with artists from different places and in their company and under the gaze of the mountains I was inspired to make this piece.

Artist Profile

Hometown: San Sebastian

Based in: San Sebastian

Ever since I was a child my shyness has led me to observe people. I noticed their looks, their body postures, the way they spoke, the way they related to each other. This observation of others allowed me to get to know others as well as myself. As emotions are universal, the emotion that I saw in others I saw in myself too, and the union that I felt with others made me feel good.
I realised that most of us go through life hiding our true essence, our emotions. But there is always a moment when that comes out. Sometimes a person's emotion is felt in a second, in a gesture, in a look, and that second is what I want to capture in my works of art, so that second of authenticity is eternal.

There is also a noticeable influence of ancient art in my works because I like to feel that there were people centuries ago who captured the same universal emotions that I want to express today, teaching me that emotions are not only universal, but also timeless.

I do both painting and sculpture. I always give a deteriorated aspect to my works, wear and tear, breaks generated by myself, wanting to express the passage of time that I mentioned before.
