Artist Statement

Aorta is one of Oskar Zięta’s organic sculptures. Its shape suggests an openwork cocoon or heart composed of streamlined forms. The name of the sculpture refers to the shape of the main and largest artery in the human organism, whose function is to distribute oxygenated blood to every cell in the body. The sculpture can be treated as a metaphor of the physical source of life—a corporeal, tangible structure connecting the heart with all the arteries.

At the same time, it is a sculpture with a light, nearly poetic form. It presents differently from every side, displaying streamlined profiles with empty spaces between them. The lightweight forms executed from gleaming steel create a frame for the surroundings.

“My aim was to transform the frigid steel into something radically contradicting the properties of the material. I wanted to juxtapose stability and strength with an organic, openwork, light shape. This sculpture can thus be read in many ways, even as a metaphor for life itself.” —Oskar Zięta

Aorta combines the ephemeral with the permanent. It is a sculpture embodying the spirit of ceaseless action—relentless yet full of contradictions.
