Artist Statement

IconCaretDown

"As embodiment of the George Bataille’s philosophy on violating borders, on the opposite side of the traditional painting canvas which puts a fence between space and itself, Otto Batuhan Türker's specified technique banishes the border between the artwork and its architecture, its space. Split Canvas has an in-between identity which is neither a sculpture nor a painting. It is a pure and living canvas that floats in space."

Split Canvas is the exploration to reach to the pure canvas that is purged from arbitrary representations. It speaks itself. Showcased around the world, Split Canvas serie is dedicated to Kazimir Malevich.
Based on Suprematist Manifesto:

"Color and texture in painting are ends in themselves. They are the essence of painting, but this essence has always been destroyed by the subject.
….
For art is the ability to construct, not on the interrelation of form and color, and not on an aesthetic basis of beauty in composition, but on the basis of weight speed and the direction of movement. Forms must he given life and the right to individual existence. An artist is under the obligation to be a free creator, but not a freebooter. An artist is given talent in order that he may give to life his share of creation and increase the flow of life. Only in absolute creation will he acquire his right.

Our world of art has become new, non-objective, pure. Everything has vanished, there remains a mass of material, from which the new forms will he built.

in order to depict the movement of modern life, one must operate with its forms. Which made the arrival of painting at its goal more difficult.

The new realism in painting is very much realism in painting, for it contains no realism of mountains, sky, water. Until now there was realism of objects, but not of painted units of color, which are constructed so that they depend neither on form, nor on color, nor on their position relative to each other. Each form is free and individual. Each form is a world. Any painting surface is more alive than any face from which a pair of eyes and a grin jut out. A face painted in a picture gives a pitiful parody of life, and this allusion is only a reminder of the living. But a surface lives, it has been born."

Artist Profile

Hometown: Ankara

Based in: Ankara - İstanbul - Berlin

Working on spatial and artistic practices, Otto Batuhan Türker produces approaches that define the representation of the idea with the construction process of the work. The process of construction as a result of the analysis / psychoanalysis of the object, the situation and the event bears the traces of the artist's deconstructionist attitude. The artist objectifies ‘the construction of perception’, ‘visual and kinesthetic experience’, ‘objects’ as well as ‘structures’ and the world of the built environment ; the social, economic and institutional approaches that relate the individual with these in terms of context with a rationalist style. The artist, who took part in the installations and exhibitions of artists such as Hale Tenger, Armin Linke, Turiya Magadlena at the 16th Istanbul Biennial (2019), was included in the Saatchi Art collection, curated by Megan Wright with 'Split Canvas: International Klein Blue' in July 2019. The artist, who opened his first solo show in METU in 2018 (May), was awarded by Architizer, ArtAnkara Contemporary Art Fair and ISMD. [Representing galleries: the Artling (Singapore), Singulart (Paris), Saatchi Art (London)]

Artist Statement: ''I confess, my soul does not fit in any academic formalism, including definitions to apply which motives the output that concretes in artisan’s hands. My soul addresses the spirit which comprises a body of data, extends beyond certain fundamental truths and dogmas that limit the artist within their fence. I cannot be taken shelter in the inhabitable shores since I have tasted experiences of any kind of intense pleasure that extends beyond the known. Experiences which are sexual, fetishistic, anarchistic, defensive, political et cetera. The artist’s real truth, the experience, is always in loop which starts from anywhere then falls into the endless abyss. As opposed to the definitions, I deny any information for the informations sake. To find my own truth… Which defines myself as an artist which is not in the dictionaries, but in life itself.''
