The Rug: ‘âl-Kush’, 2020
[exhibited in ArtAnkara 6th Contemporary Art Fair, 12-15 March 2020, Turkey]
Otto Batuhan Türker
wall installation
70 cm x 115 cm (Installation Area); Acrylic on Canvas: 70 cm x 100 cm, Acrylic Remains in Plexiglass Unit: 10 cm x 25 cm x 70 cm

The first published work of the awarded 'the Rug' serie , Otto Batuhan Turker's fictional excavations are first appeared in the production performance of the artist: 'Strata' [Strata, performance, 06-07,12,2019, Furuzan Olsen Exhibition Hall, Ankara-Turkey] and it took almost 600 hours to excavate each.

'Strata' is an archaeological excavation during which the artist questions his aesthetic relationship with the environment and the culture that he exists within as a body. The fictional rugs, which he excavates in the course of Strata, are the analogical artefacts of his aesthetical consciousness which is the product of his culture and his interactions with said culture.

During the performance, he excavates the layers of his topographically painted canvases within a setting that is made up of collected rugs from his surroundings. This setting is the metaphor of the space that his interactions with his culture and his environment take place. The carvings and the rugs that he produces in a chronologically backwards manner through reconstruction (carving and excavating) are archaeological representations as fictional artefacts of his culture.

Strata is an exploration and reconstruction of the cultural aesthetic norms as a production performance.

Artist Profile

Hometown: Ankara

Based in: Ankara - İstanbul - Berlin

Working on spatial and artistic practices, Otto Batuhan Türker produces approaches that define the representation of the idea with the construction process of the work. The process of construction as a result of the analysis / psychoanalysis of the object, the situation and the event bears the traces of the artist's deconstructionist attitude. The artist objectifies ‘the construction of perception’, ‘visual and kinesthetic experience’, ‘objects’ as well as ‘structures’ and the world of the built environment ; the social, economic and institutional approaches that relate the individual with these in terms of context with a rationalist style. The artist, who took part in the installations and exhibitions of artists such as Hale Tenger, Armin Linke, Turiya Magadlena at the 16th Istanbul Biennial (2019), was included in the Saatchi Art collection, curated by Megan Wright with 'Split Canvas: International Klein Blue' in July 2019. The artist, who opened his first solo show in METU in 2018 (May), was awarded by Architizer, ArtAnkara Contemporary Art Fair and ISMD. [Representing galleries: the Artling (Singapore), Singulart (Paris), Saatchi Art (London)]

Artist Statement: ''I confess, my soul does not fit in any academic formalism, including definitions to apply which motives the output that concretes in artisan’s hands. My soul addresses the spirit which comprises a body of data, extends beyond certain fundamental truths and dogmas that limit the artist within their fence. I cannot be taken shelter in the inhabitable shores since I have tasted experiences of any kind of intense pleasure that extends beyond the known. Experiences which are sexual, fetishistic, anarchistic, defensive, political et cetera. The artist’s real truth, the experience, is always in loop which starts from anywhere then falls into the endless abyss. As opposed to the definitions, I deny any information for the informations sake. To find my own truth… Which defines myself as an artist which is not in the dictionaries, but in life itself.''
