Artist Statement
Branches can be seem as symbols of “ruin” and “decay,” like a heap of fallen debris, but Pang Yun does not follow this idea of things fading away and instead creates new landscapes and expresses new life in brushstrokes of these tangled branches in order to fight against the perception of nothingness. Therefore, the conceptual depths of her work lie in her attention to
detail and her unique creative process, the reinvention of painted branches into something new and never-ending, allowing for a transcendent experience of art and time.

Artist Profile
Born: 1975
Hometown: Chongqing
Based in: Chongqing
Pang Yun (庞云) is a Chongqing-based artist born 1975 in Chongqing. Her works of oil on canvas inspire quiet reflection and a sense of resolute control with detailed and technically precise brushstrokes. Her latest series “Portrait of Trees” is inspired by the natural order and structure of trees with their upward-reaching illimitable branches that stand still and tranquil against surrounding storms. At once earthly, grounded, and spiritually transcendent, her style of painting offers a freedom from tension based on the power and serenity of the natural world. With an atmosphere akin to meditation, Pang Yun layers canvases with an abundance of repetitive yet expressive strokes.
