Parker Manis was born in Columbus, GA, and currently lives and works in New York as an artist and visual concept designer in retail design, furniture, and fragrance design.
The work explores the tradition of image-making and the space between the mediums of painting and photography. Using photographic materials and processes as parameters, he incorporates methods of painting into a process that produces a hybrid product of these two image-making traditions. The dyes and pigments impregnated into the photo sensitive paper create a level of depth that draws the viewer into an intimate sense of isolation. The use of emulsion corrosion serves as an impediment to the clarity of viewership, and a reminder that some things that were, are no longer, and are but remnants left from our own personal processes of trial and error throughout life.
The resulting works are exercises in the balance of personal clarity of one's self and the adjacent intangibles of self-awareness, yielding at times highly reflective moments in which the viewer can see themselves. The works serve both as an art object and a mirror acting as an ephemeral contextual placement of the individual into the work, making that experience highly personal and unique.
