Artist Statement
The testimony of the ancients about the location of Atlantis is uncertain. According to Plato, the island was west of the Pillars of Hercules, opposite the Atlas Mountains. During a strong earthquake accompanied by a flood, the island was swallowed by the sea in one day, together with its inhabitants, the Atlanteans. Plato gives the time of the catastrophe as "9,000 years ago," that is, about 9,500 B.C.
