Artist Profile
Hometown: Brussels
Based in: Brussels
Student of an Italian Master in Rome and a Van der Kelen Academy graduate in Brussels, he has been trained as a decorative painter for 3 years before travelling around the world to create frescoes and trompe l’oeil (marbles, woods or stones imitations) in private homes and public places.
After 10 years of practice as an artisan decorative painter he gradually became a full artist painter, working on academic canvas. He exhibited in New York, Paris and Casablanca in the 2000s.
At the age of 40 he abruptly abandoned creation to devote his life to buddhism. After 8 years of monastic life, travels in Japan and South East Asia, including a 10 months retreat as a hermit in a Thai forest, he understood that he had to return to Europe and pursue his life as an artist with the aim to express the spiritual nature of the universe.
As a former buddhist monk all Poggio Di Poggio’s artworks are made with mindfulness.
He considers every day to be a special day, a fresh new journey, full of chances, happy coincidences and accidents.
Body and mind connected to the universal energy he observes things happening, each time in a particular flow and intensity.
Layer after layer he experiments and facilitates the creative process with a free mind, thriving to express the spiritual nature of the universe.
He currently works on a new series “Les Nymphéas”, a tribute to Claude Monet, the master who succeeded the most in this odyssey: the expression of the spiritual nature of the universe.
The “Les Nymphéas” series is a meditative abstraction based on the observation of a landscape, the water surface of a lily pond.
Being concerned by the multiple threats for our planet and more specifically by the water’s issues (Chemical and plastic pollution, global warming, drought, flooding) Poggio Di Poggio adds this dimension to his work.
The surfaces of the paintings are cracked, burned, referring to the climate change and emphasizing the importance of water for life.
Poggio Di Poggio is based in Brussels and also has a studio in Italy facing the Mediterranean Sea.
He’s already present in private collections and art foundations in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and The USA.
