Artist Statement
This small carved ivory plaque was found in an ancient Assyrian ruin, but it was most probably made in Phoenicia, where they excelled at decorative ivory carving. It was most likely burned when the city was sacked and left in the ground for more than 2,500 years, which gives it its wonderful patina. When I first saw it I was struck by the artist's sophisticated ability to render the figure in bas relief and so I made a drawing of it as faithfully as I know how. The image is 5"x4" and is framed at 15"x12". All materials are acid free and the picture is archivally mounted, matted, framed and ready to hang. As with all my pictures, this is a one-of-a-kind image and there are no prints or reproductions.
