This work is influenced by the artist’s childhood in Singapore and New Zealand. Revolving around the themes of education and isolation, this work portrays the artist’s desire for a temporal escape from the constraints of society into a fantasy world of her childhood imaginations, where she gains comfort with its existing inhabitants that have withdrew from reality.
Rachel's works have narratives that are bittersweet, slightly child-like and somewhat hopeful.

Artist Profile

Born: 1992

Hometown: Singapore

Lives and Works: Singapore

Rachel is a New Zealand trained artist who holds a degree in Visual Arts and a degree in Psychology and Sociology. Rachel has taught painting workshops in Singapore and overseas, ranging from private workshops to large painting demonstrations for hundreds of art enthusiasts. Her work has been shown regularly in solo and group exhibitions at art galleries in New Zealand, and shortlisted for prestigious NZ national art awards. In 2015 and 2017 she was the winner of the City college art award, held by Gallery De Novo in NZ. Her work has been featured in University magazines and she has sold work to art collectors in Israel, China, Belgium and Germany.

Rachel is influenced by her childhood experiences of studying in Singapore and in New Zealand. Narrative-driven, her works revolve around themes of education and isolation. Her works have a dreamy and quiet atmosphere, like looking through a fog or a hazed memory of a dream. Symbols of comfort such as umbrellas and blankets are often repeated in her paintings, while nostalgic memories are encased within the painting’s inhabitants that have withdrew from reality. Rachel's works have narratives that are bittersweet, slightly child-like and somewhat hopeful.
