The Call is an intence new Series that has emerged gradually over the last 18 months while I have been spending a great deal of time out on the silent, ancient hills of the Brecon Beacons. The glacier-worn limestone here is full of fossils and caves, the marks of incomprehendable ammounts of time and change. The forms in The Call are complex, flowing and rythmic. The interior spaces are very important and there is dramatic change as you move around the sculptures.
This piece, The Call II, took a very long time to make because I kept trying to hold back the form, to keep it within more familiar spaces. It opened out the Series for me and now I have accepted the mysteries of it.
The Call II is made from layers of high-fired clays with porcelain at the surface. The colour is a soft white with black crackle.

Raised between New York, USA and Oxford, UK, within a chaotic family of academics, I am a Sculptor by both nature and nurture, a muddy day-dreamer taught to question everything.
I recieved my Batchelor of Fine Art (Hons) from Exeter College of Art and Design, UK in 1985. As part of my studies I trained in firgure and portrait sculpture with the outstanding figurative sculptor Lloyd Lilly at the Department of Fine Art at Boston Univercity, and in Ceramics with Richard Hirsch and Chris Gustin at The Program in Artisanry, Boston Univercity, USA in 1983-4.
From there I chose a nomadic existence, collecting views and making sculpture in ceramic and parting with it on the back-roads and by-ways until 1992 when the arrival of my eldest son anchored me to the UK.
Osprey Studios was a fluid mix of Studio and Community practice until 1994 when it coalesced with the acquisition of a terrifying dragon of a kiln.
The move to the stunning and inspirational landscape of Wales in 1998, with it’s rich, ancient culture, vibrant humour and brick-making tradition has allowed Osprey Studios to establish and the work to mature.
Everything I make is unique and made directly with clay. Construction is a hands-on, visceral process. The clay and the techniques are chosen to generate active, expressive intensity that can be reflected through the permanent, finished artwork, locking the moment-to-moment inspiration and emotional engagement into the clay itself.
My new work is all about the Natural World, the constant change and our place with in it. Music is the guide.
My Sculptures are in private collections all over the world and also with the National Trust and the National Parks here in the UK. My Public work is intensely collaborative.
