Artist Statement
African masks were an inspiration for these works. The images are produced through a layering process that also relates to layers of masks. I am interested in questioning the individuality of artworks. The process of layering reflects the issue of the social mask.

Reggy (Tong) Liu (b.1992, Harbin, China) is a London based artist. Liu’s work is about ‘Masquerade’ issue combining art, psychology and neuropsychology, revealing the intangible emotions in-between spiritual and reality world. Reggy’s research navigates her own communication experience, and merges the differences in between oriental and western cultures. Her performance explores the human condition and the concept of the ‘mask’. Adopting performance combined with painting, Liu explores the human condition in the contemporary world and the dichotomy of authenticity and fiction, involving the audience into an internal self journey and experience. Liu challenges her weakness, fears and uncertainties, in order to explore the transformation of her subconsciousness through the passage of time.
