Artist Statement

This painting reflects a sense of dark playfulness, mischievousness and rebellion which is an emotional response to a period of time within my life. Traditional gaming and gambling culture has been a strong influence to the emotional expression and context of this piece. There is a strong inspiration that comes from playing cards, specifically the 'joker' card due to its somewhat happy go lucky, and master of none attitude. The inspiration of p laying cards and connotations to gambling shine through in the checkerboard motif at the base of the painting, and the bold use of colours that are present in traditional playing cards - red, yellow black and white.

The unpredictable placement of the circles within the clear gird, reflects a sense of illusiveness and mistrust. White the washed out, frail colour blocks hint at a fragility at the core.

As in all of my work, my prime inspiration comes from observations of our surrounding environment which is expressed in the earthy tones of the colours used within this painting.

Artist Profile

Born: 1997

Hometown: Pescara

Based in: London

Sabrina Brouwers is an Italian/German artist based in London. Sabrina graduated from Falmouth University in 2019 with a Bachelors in Fine Art and soon after completed her Post-graduate Diploma in Graphic Design at the University of Art London, in Chelsea.

Sabrina’s nomadic upbringing and curiosity for design principles have been great motivators to her practice. By extension, her work sparks a conversation between the act of journeying through our man-made landscape and our response to the complexity of our natural surroundings. Sabrina’s response to these themes results in colourless and non objective compositions where she uses elementary architectural forms to explore the psychological effects of simplicity.

Sabrina’s body of work is characterised by it’s non-objective and monochrome qualities. The abstract paintings are centralized around a mathematically plotted grid system in the base of each motif - representing the unnaturally ordered character of the urban landscape. Using the fluid shape of the circle Sabrina aims to challenge this order. The compositions are determined through a balance of intuition and strategy, by placing the circles inside the coordinate system. By challenging the rigid grid system through a complex layered process, a dialogue between emergence and disappearance is triggered, it is the barely visible grid format and recurring circle variable at the base of each composition which act as grounding elements to visual simplicity.
