Artist Statement

Montmartre has provided a lasting source of inspiration for many artists—from Renoir to Utrillo, to name only a few. Perched on the top of a small hill, until now it has maintained a little bit of its 18th-century atmosphere.

This boldly painted composition at first presents a puzzle for the eyes, which are stimulated by a rhythmic juxtaposition of yellows, blues and greens. Architectural elements and the trees either reflect golden light or dissolve in cool shadows, creating areas of pure colour and hinting at the artist’s interest in Japanese Ukiyo-e, where subjects are often blended into pure colours and patterns.

"I painted this motif in September 2019 during my trip to Paris. I remember well the warm autumn weather and the children screaming in the neighbourhood as I stood and painted next to a playground. And a lot of tourists! This scene is just behind the popular Sacré-Cœur Basilica." — Samir recalls.

An exquisite colourist and a strong advocate of realistic traditions, Samir Rakhmanov creates work that exhibits an effortless and elegant aura. Luminous and fresh, each piece feels as though it has just been completed. Samir internalizes the achievements from great artists of the past, from Diego Velázquez to Édouard Vuillard. He is passionate about advancing the figurative tradition forward, and he has already developed a distinctive voice of his own.

Born in Ukraine and raised in Azerbaijan, in 2020 Samir Rakhmanov graduated with distinction from the prestigious Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg, Russia. The artist has held exhibitions in Russia, France and the United States and his works sell out fast given a large collector base not only in Europe and the USA but also in the Middle East, China, Australia and Singapore to name a few. Samir is a resident artist of our gallery The Russian Ark.
