Abstraction is a language in and of itself. Through using a variety of abstract painting techniques, I create a narrative composed of shapes, colours, and textures through which to communicate with the world. I’m inspired by the endless potentiality of creative form and expression. Creative energy is continually coursing through my body. I don’t have to produce it, it simply flows through me.
I believe that abstract art serves a larger purpose for the well-being of the individual and society. Through viewing abstract forms the viewer is encouraged to grasp the painting first with their emotions. The goal of my work is to facilitate an opportunity for the viewer to connect with a deeper part of themselves; to remember who they are and who they want to become.

Sarah Rutledge is a self-taught contemporary abstract artist from Ontario, Canada and resides just outside of Toronto. Although Sarah always dabbled in the creative arts, it wasn’t until 2018 that she invested all her energy and passion into abstract painting. An intuitive and contemplative thinker, Sarah always discerned her immense capacity to express herself through painting and that intuitive nature is expressed through her free flowing works.
Since 2018, Rutledge has participated in 6 group exhibitions in Guelph and Toronto, Ontario. Notably her participation in the exhibition, “A Celebration” at Arta Gallery, was her first show in Toronto and featured women artists from across Canada. Sarah had her first solo exhibition “Beyond the Surface” at Necessary Arts in Guelph, Ontario in 2019, only a year after pursuing her art career. In 2021, Rutledge will be participating in a group exhibition in Toronto at Twist Gallery.
Sarah has been featured and interviewed in a number of blogs and two of her paintings are featured in the Summer 2020 Issue of Home in Canada Magazine, as part of the interior design of Michaela Burns from Mint Decor in Toronto. Rutledge was interviewed about her work and career by Toronto Art Curator and Advisor, Liza Zhurkovskaya from the Curator on the Go Podcast in May 2020.
Throughout her relatively short career, Rutledge has completed 20 commissioned paintings, including 11 pieces for a prominent Burlington, Ontario Condominium, as well as 5 for Real Estate Development Company, Fusion Homes in Guelph, Ontario. Rutledge plans to continue to collaborate with interior designers and builders to create beautiful spaces.
