Artist Statement
This painting is a part of the series, Forming Jeong (2022)
This series reflects the Korean understanding of jeong (정)--a word referring to feelings of affection, sympathy, attachment, and an altruistic sense of human nature. This term is deeply woven into the fabric of Korean culture, being a foundation for every kind of love. Forming Jeong is an exploration of one aspect of this complex feeling, focusing on the growth of jeong over time and in proximity within relationship.

Artist Profile
Born: 1991
Hometown: Seoul
Based in: The Hague, Netherlands
Sé Young Kipp is a Korean-American artist based in The Hague, Netherlands. Originally born and raised in Seoul, South Korea before immigrating to the United States, her work embodies transience and movement. Constantly exploring the idea of identity formation, she draws from her experience of uprooting along with her own journey of melding cultures and places that at times seem to contradict one another. As identity can be shaped throughout time and environment, her works are a reflection of finding a sense of true self, a life-long practice she continues to contextualize through her paintings.
From the tactile act of scraping paint off the canvas to layering with heavy brushstrokes, her process is cathartic, intuitive, and honest. Drawing inspiration from Dansaekhwa, also known as Korean Minimalism, she hopes to carry the characteristics of this movement into her body of work.
