Artist Statement

The red-on-white landscape paintings are a complex layering of multiple references and motifs far from the classical landscape notions of the ideal; rather, they are a collision of his memories of a now disappearing natural world with a critical reflection on Korea’s contemporary sociopolitical panorama. Laboriously rendered in exquisite detail and rich tonality, Lee’s paintings longingly recall the vistas from his childhood on Geoje Island, off Korea’s southern coast, where the views of beaches, mountains, natural harbours, and far-off temples have been altered by urban development.

His fragmented landscapes weave together historical references, trauma, and the conflicts present within a rapidly modernized South Korea. Through his exclusive use of red and the juxtaposition of various symbolic and contradictory references, as if a work of collage, Lee lends the works an uncanny tension and mystery.

Artist Profile

Hometown: Geojedo, Korea

Based in: Seoul, Korea

In his series of Between Red, Seahyun Lee endlessly reconstructs and reconstitutes the landscape of the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). Reworking fragments of terrain, blocks of land and water, he creates a world that functions according to the logic of its own terms. In this sense, it is a world that is entirely hermetic - appropriately so, considering that the territory Lee depicts is defined by the very impregnability of its borders. Lee studied in Hongik University in Seoul, and in Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. His work has been extensively shown in England such as ASPEX Contemporary Art Gallery, Portsmouth, and Harewood House, Leeds, in 2009. He also has participated in group exhibitions in Bochum Museum, Germany, in Santralistanbul, Turkey, as well as in the Ljubljana Graphic Biennale, Slovenia. Currently Lee lives and works in Seoul, working for his upcoming solo and group exhibitions in China as well as in Singapore.
