Lives and Works: Singapore
Singaporean artist Sean Lee (b. 1985) has shown his work internationally and locally, participating in both group and solo exhibitions. His solo exhibitions include The Empire project in Istanbul, Turkey in 2012. His work has also been shown at Singapore’s Objectifs Centre for Photography and Filmmaking, as well as the exclusive New York Photo Festival, and is recognised on an international platform for his expertise in the area of photography.
His first body of work ‘Shauna’ was made between 2007 and 2009 where took on the persona of a ladyboy in Siem Reap’s red light district. In 2015, this work was exhibited in Saatchi Gallery in London. ‘Shauna’ was nominated for the Prix Découverte on the 40th anniversary of the Arles Photography Festival in Arles, France.
His long-term body of work on his parents ‘Two People’, received Singapore’s most prestigious photography award in 2011, the ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu award, and was exhibited in the Singapore Biennale in 2013.
Much of Lee's work can be found in the collection of the Singapore Art Museum, as well as in the Sandor Family Collection.
Lee's first book, ‘Shauna’, was released in September 2014 and it is now part of the MoMA Library Collection.
