Artist Statement

After walking for hours through the busy alleyways of the old Fes Medina, amidst a suffocating heatwave I came across the El Attarine Medersa. That morning I had planned an “easy day”, a quick walk around the Medina before seeking refuge in the comfort of my hotel’s aircon; temperature outside was 46C/115F.
The 14th century University, one of the oldest in the world, was a little piece of heaven. Beautiful detailing in the arches, colourful mosaic tiles and fountains.
Midday is usually not my favourite time to photograph but in the case the diagonal shadow crossing the internal courtyard enhanced the delicate features of the building.
