Artist Statement
Colors of Apathy is a series of work that reflects upon how the general society consciously overlooks the livelihoods, everyday sights, and experiences of people who live in poverty.
Using vibrant colors and abstract forms juxtaposed with grimy subject matters , I hope to bring to light the indifferent attitudes of our society towards people living in lower social economic statuses. Featured in this work is a tower of cardboard stacked on a trolley headed to a recycling center. Such trolleys can be seen around public housing estates in the wee hours of the morning, as elderly folk will wheel them to the recycling centers to exchange for a small amount of money.

Shen Jiaqi is an artist living and working in Singapore.
Inspired from my surrounding urban environments of Singapore, my works revolve around the various unique social issues I experience and personally encounter. Drawing from my experiences as an millennial, artist, and art educator, my inspirations stem from systematic restrains, societal norms, and cultural expectations. Aesthetically inspired by scenes from everyday life and the urban environment, I seek to start dialogues and elevate awareness about our shared but unsaid experiences as a society.
