Artist Statement

IconCaretDown

This full-size three-dimensional artwork invites the audience to experience repeated dimensional movements and a changed point of view, while standing and looking at it face-to-face.
It is surely a three-dimensional work standing in the space. However, it looks like two-dimensional art against the white background, while only a few moves enable you to look at the rear space of the work from a different angle and through the work.

Artist Profile

Born: 1975

Hometown: Seoul, South Korea

Based in: Seoul, South Korea

Song JinSu sketches people, objects and spaces around him, as if creating a drawing on paper with a pen, using wires of different thicknesses. This is sculpture not a two-dimensional painting; and a drawing in the space, not on the flat surface. Song, who makes his own lines and strokes by bending, snapping and connecting thick wires in a free fashion, increases the density of the lines with the Oriental traditional ‘one stroke technique (一筆揮之)’ through repeated short straight and curved lines. In this sense, his work involves drawing rather than making, and he handles his art material – thick wires – like lines on canvas and treats the space like paper. Also, the process of his work itself is all about drawing and painting, not that his work converts drawing to three-dimensional. In this regard, his work with the free flowing of thick wires tears down and goes beyond the boundary of painting and sculpture through the concept of ‘drawing,’ expanding the scope of sculpture.

Song JinSu was born in Seoul in 1975. He graduated from Kyungwon University with a bachelor fine arts(B.F.A.) in Environmental sculpture. Song is currently participating in a residential art program at SFAC Art Space Shindang. Since his first solo exhibition at Art Space_SHindang(Seoul, Korea) in 2013, he also has had 2 solo exhibitions, Draw-ing(CHOIJUNGAH gallery, Seoul) in 2014 and Drawing – scatter(Sheraton ArtGallery, Incheon) in 2015, as well as a number of group exhibitions including Taehwa River ECO Art Festival(2015, Taewha River Park, Ulsan), Family Love(2014, YangPyeong Art Museum, YangPyeong), LINE-drawing(wumin art center, Cheongju), Juan Media Festival_Media Physical; Boundary & Leaps(2013, Incheon Soccer Stadium, Incheon), Korea Tomorrow(2012, Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center, Seoul). In addition, Song participated in art collaboration with TISSOT, SM Entertainment, Nefs Co.,Ltd. and Royal & Co.,LTD. The State University of New York(SUNY) Korea has his work of art.
