Artist Statement

The philosophically conceptual abstract artist Steve Baris explores the spatial and temporal inconsistencies of our rapidly developing technological age. He lives and works in Philadelphia.

Diagrammatic metaphors represent continual transformation and change processes. A topological reconstruction of linear geometry replaces a faded recollection due to a persistent curiosity with discontinuities, disruptions, and detours.

Baris’s practice is multi-dimensional incorporating his background in video and printmaking.

An installation of cinder blocks succumbing to gravity was the catalyst for Toppling, a series in response to the disequilibrium caused by the pandemic.

His most recent series Never the Same Space Twice, oil on mylar and canvas, explores a visual representation of the process of transformation and change. The architectonic linear forms traverse the edges of the piece as if to continue to the next, while the background is distressed and disrupted.

The repetition of form and colour, similar to tribal patterns, reflects the contrast between his early exposure to Native American culture and his blood connection to New York.

Along with New York and Europe, renowned American artists like Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, and Agnes Pelton were also exposed to Native American civilizations.
